Simple, low-cost ways to keep your aging dog comfortable and happy
My 8-year-old dog has become much clingier over the past two years. It sleeps most of the time at home, but still loves running around wildly when going outside. Does your senior pet act the same way?
As a dog owner with 8 years of experience, I’d like to share some easy and budget-friendly care tips. You don’t need to spend extra money — just make good use of your spare time.
Warm Companionship
- Spend 10 minutes petting your dog from head to back every day after getting home. It helps your furry friend feel relaxed and secure.
- Talk to it in a soft tone. Even if dogs cannot understand words, they can sense your mood. Never leave it ignored, which will ease its anxiety.
Keep a Familiar Living Environment
- Do not frequently move its bed or change feeding times suddenly.
- Avoid rearranging furniture randomly. Senior dogs have declining memory, and a steady environment brings them a strong sense of safety and prevents confusion.
Soothe Separation Anxiety
- Leave your old clothes or its favorite toys at home when you go out. Your scent can comfort your lonely dog. There is no need to buy expensive specialized calming pet toys, as most of them work poorly.
- If you worry about destructive chewing, place your dog in a small familiar area such as the balcony with its bed and water bowl.
